Packers Prospect Primer: Five Tackles at or around 25

Image
The Packers have a big question looming regarding David Bahktiari. Speculation is running rampant, but nothing concrete regarding his future is known. Rasheed Walker looks to be the future left tackle in Green Bay, but what if the Packers feel like, in a loaded tackle class that could see eight guys go on night one, they need to upgrade the left tackle position? Five guys make up tier two, all of whom could be available at 25 or in a spot they could reasonably trade up for.  JC Latham Alabama Latham is an overpowering presence at the tackle position; standing at 6’6” and 360 Pounds, he uses his size and power to bully defenders at the line of scrimmage. Scouts rave about his ability in pass pro, a required trait for any blindside tackle due to his raw power, but are concerned about his footwork, which to me begs the question of whether is he TOO big to hold up against the more agile speed rushers at the next level who will come at him with complicated pass rush move sets. Packers Prospect Primer: Tyler Nubin

Image
The Packers have shown time and time again that their board doesn’t necessarily line up with consensus. This draft has all the makings of another instance of this. The 2024 first round is loaded at Quarterback and Wide Reciever, the two positions the Packers probably need the least. It is top-heavy at corner, with the Packers likely needing to trade up to get a crack at the big three, which with 11 draft picks is undoubtedly possible; however, for this first prospect primer, we are going to look at a guy who will probably be available at the 25th pick—safety Tyler Nubin from Minnesota. Nubin shows elite coverage skills for a safety in three seasons as a starter; Nubin had ratings when targeted of 21.5, 41.3, and 17.5, along with 12 interceptions and 11 breakdowns. He earned multiple honors while at Minnesota, including All Big Ten (First Team) and All-American (Second Team) Strengths   Along with an impressive track record in coverage, Nubin has the ideal safety role frame and a co...

Who the Hell is Jeff Hafley?

Image
So you, like most, have yet to learn who Jeff Hafley is. Thankfully, it's easy to find information about a guy in today's society. Here are the main points about Jeff Hafley, the coach Aggression: The first takeaway I saw is that his defenses are aggressive. This is something I love. I am a big fan of the mindset that says, “Bleep you, we’re blitzing you, deal with it.” Mitch Wolfe of BC Eagle Insider said about Hafley: "He loves single-high/middle field closed coverages. It's pretty aggressive with blitzing. Mostly a 4-3/Even front guy but has some more diverse stuff in his bag." Basically, the common consensus is, above all else, expect a more aggressive defense in Green Bay  Press Coverage: Within an hour of his hiring, a picture of a PowerPoint from what I would assume is a BC team meeting surfaced. The particular slide leaked and broke down the key points and benefits of running press coverage. Under Joe Barry, Packers fans spent many Sundays be...

Packers Thermometer: DC Candidate Takes

Image
Today, I'm taking a thermometer and putting it on the forehead of some takes I have heard from various Packers media  The thermometer reads as an error (Candidates that have mitigating circumstances) Mike Vrabel, former Titans Head Coach Background: When Matt LaFleur left LA, he was looking to be a playcaller, and Mike Vrabel gave him the opportunity; that opportunity turned into the Packers' head coach spot. Knowing how Matt operates, I believe he would return the favor. A former head coach working under one of his former coordinators doesn't happen often. Still, a couple of situations come to mind: Mike Martz in Chicago with Lovie Smith and Mike Nolan in Dallas with Mike McCarthy. Vrabel had a meteoric rise as a defensive mind before becoming Tennessees' head coach, and how defenses continued to show that same level of play throughout his tenure. What makes this take read as an error: I'm not sure Vrabel takes the demotion. He's been getting int...

Keep, Clip, Cut (Offense)

Image
With the season over. Let's take a minute to go through who I would keep (resign/not move on), clip (restructure), or cut off this season's roster  For starters, I'm bringing back anyone on the practice squad. It's camp depth and costs next to nothing to keep around, so they're all kept, and they've all been signed to future contracts anyway. Quarterbacks Jordan Love: Keep Love is a keep. The only question is how big is his new deal. Sportrac projects it four years 180 million. I think it will be closer to 200, maybe 190 or 195, but he's a keep. Sean Clifford: Keep, but... Clifford is also a keep. He looks like a good backup quarterback; having said that, with how deep this QB class, I would take a Day 3 flyer if a name falls through the cracks. Give Clifford the competition to continue his development. Still, also, you want to make sure you're doing due diligence and having that Quaterback insurance policy 66 differen...

Loookin' Pack: 48232 Woodshed, TX

In what was the most dominating win in the Matt LaFleur era and the most dominating win in the last maybe decade plus. The Packers go into Dallas and blow out the Dallas Cowboys to move onto the divisional round.  Packers first drive The Packers won the toss and elected to receive; Bland picked up an illegal contact penalty on the second play to negate a sack and give GB a first down. Two plays later, Jordan Love, cool in the pocket, fires one out to Doubs for 22 22-yard gain. Two plays later, Jones picks up a modest gain for another first. Later in the drive, Jones breaks off another big first-down run. Two plays later, Musgrave picks up a first down. The Packers cap off the opening drive with a Jones touchdown on a read option Cowboys first drive Dallas gets a first on third down. It's probably a missed hold on the Dallas left tackle, but it's moot as Dallas punts.  Packers second drive They start off with a deep attempt, but it is broken up. On third down, Love throws a see...

Packers Preview: Throw the stats out the window

We will have Packers playoff football in 2024, which in itself is a win, regardless of what the stats say. I usually give comprehensive breakdowns of where teams rank against the rest of the league in these previews, but this week, I honestly don't care. We know Dallas is the better team. It's why this is a 2 vs 7 match-up in the playoffs, but ultimately, this is a gravy game. We have exceeded all expectations this season, just to be here is a win. My keys to the game are simple enjoy it
