Packers Prospect Primer: Tyler Nubin
The Packers have shown time and time again that their board doesn’t necessarily line up with consensus. This draft has all the makings of another instance of this. The 2024 first round is loaded at Quarterback and Wide Reciever, the two positions the Packers probably need the least. It is top-heavy at corner, with the Packers likely needing to trade up to get a crack at the big three, which with 11 draft picks is undoubtedly possible; however, for this first prospect primer, we are going to look at a guy who will probably be available at the 25th pick—safety Tyler Nubin from Minnesota.
Nubin shows elite coverage skills for a safety in three seasons as a starter; Nubin had ratings when targeted of 21.5, 41.3, and 17.5, along with 12 interceptions and 11 breakdowns. He earned multiple honors while at Minnesota, including All Big Ten (First Team) and All-American (Second Team)
Strengths
Along with an impressive track record in coverage, Nubin has the ideal safety role frame and a complementary playstyle that doesn’t shy from contact. He displays exceptional explosiveness with fluid movement and adaptability in coverage combined with strong ball tracking skills and closing speed that helps with his strong tackling ability that helps deliver impactful hits, making Nubin a solid all-around safety. Nubin has also displayed outstanding leadership and displays a nice swagger and confidence in the secondary which could be crucial as Jeff Hafley attempts to put his system in place, especially when you factor in his ability to play both as a box and single high safety.
Weakness
Despite being a solid all-around safety, Nubin lacks elite explosiveness and long speed and doesn’t have a lot of fluidity and speed in transitions against agile receivers. Choppy footwork when playing deep gives him a below-average change of direction and limited range in the middle of the field; both lead to occasionally missed tackles and misjudged routes. This leads to him sometimes taking penalties in coverage to maintain leverage.
Summary
Nubin is a promising safety prospect for the NFL, possessing a solid build and a physical playing style that makes him effective against both the run and pass, with a confident playing style and exceptional leadership qualities. In the right situation, these makeup for his lack of explosiveness. Considering the Packers lack a lot in the defensive backfield, he can fill out the box safety role in Jeff Hafley's nickel sets before developing into a solid all-around safety in base sets for Hafley.
If Nubin is at 25, he would be a perfect pick that fits the draft and develop the philosophy the Packers use.
